Memorial Honeymoon in Myanmar

Start the transition into a new chapter in life with a romantic trip to Myanmar. The first few days cover the must-sees such as Yangon’s colonial buildings, the temples of Bagan, and Inle Lake. The following days go deeper into Burmese culture where there’s an opportunity to join a traditional Buddhist ceremony and receive a blessing from a monk. Each day of the trip is filled with activities that provide a glimpse into a Myanmar’s rich culture.

Detailed schedule

Day 1 - Welcome to Yangon

Upon arrival at Yangon International Airport, Sonasia’s guide & driver will pick you up and transfer directly to the hotel in Yangon.
After checking in the hotel, take a private walking tour of downtown with an expert from the Yangon Heritage Trust.

Top off the afternoon exploration of colonial heritage with high tea at The Strand, one of Myanmar’s most iconic colonial-era hotels.

Stop on the way into town for a foot massage at Yangon’s best spa. This is a perfect way to relax and unwind after a long international flight.

A welcome dinner awaits by the hotel’s poolside restaurant with a bottle of champagne to toast the first night in Myanmar.

Day 2 - Yangon - Bagan

This morning, transfer to the airport for a domestic flight to Nyaung Oo. 

Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel in Bagan. A special wedding present is waiting in the room upon arrival.

After freshening up, the journey begins with a visit to an elevated point with spectacular views over the surrounding plains. This is the perfect introduction to the grandeur and scope of Bagan’s architecture. Next, continue to Ananda Temple, one of the most revered temples in Bagan, which is quiet in the morning before all the tour buses arrive.

Afterwards, go to Myinkaba Village and visit Gubyaukgyi Temple which is noted for the beautiful mural paintings on its inner walls and well-preserved plaster carvings on the exterior. Nearby is Manuha Temple and Nan Paya Temple, two smaller temples with nice Buddha statues and stone work.

Go back to the hotel to take a break and escape the intense afternoon heat of Bagan.

Later this afternoon, resume the journey with a visit to two workshops that produce Bagan’s most famous products: lacquerware and wood crafts. Watch as the skilled craftsmen use techniques passed down through generations to create these beautiful items.

Next, travel by horse carriage to explore more temples starting at Ananda and passing by many of Bagan’s famous monuments.

Day 3 - Bagan - Exploration

Begin today at 08:00 with a visit to the colourful Nyaung Oo Market where dozens of vendors come to sell their fresh produce and goods.  The market is at its busiest early in the morning as the locals come to do their shopping. This is a great opportunity to observe the daily lifestyle of the friendly locals.

Continue to the neighboring villages to learn about the local’s traditional livelihood. Observe the interesting process of creating poneyay gyi (pea powder paste) and see how local plum jam is made and packed.

Resume the temple tour by visiting the glittering Shwezigon Pagoda, a prototype of later Myanmar stupas.

Transfer to the Taungbi Monastery to participate in a special traditional Buddhist ceremony. Afterwards, the monks will give a special blessing to ensure good luck and happiness. This auspicious occasion is sure to be an unforgettable part of the honeymoon in Myanmar.

Return to the hotel for a break from the midday heat and lunch at leisure.

The romance and beauty of Myanmar's Irrawaddy River awaits later in the afternoon. Begin by boarding a private boat for a cruise down the river, soaking in the scenery, and enjoying sunset cocktails and canapés along the way. Return to shore and dinner is at leisure.

Day 4 - Bagan - Heho - Inle Lake

Transfer to Nyaung Oo Airport in Bagan for a domestic flight to Heho. Enjoy a one-hour scenic drive to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway village to the lovely Inle Lake.

Start with a visit to the Nyaung Shwe morning market where locals gather every morning to buy and sell fresh produce from the lake and its surroundings.

Continue by local trishaw down to the bustling canal which is a hive of activity in the morning as boats from the lake come in to unload tomatoes and other vegetables for distribution to the markets around the country. Watch as baskets laden with produce are transferred from boats to trucks and bikes.

Hop back on the trishaw and wind through quiet streets. Make a stop at the ‘tomato house’, a warehouse-like structure where the tomatoes are sorted and priced for sale. Then continue past some of the many monasteries and nunneries in town, and take some photos.

Then venture onto the lake via Then venture onto the lake via a private luxury motorboat. Experience Inle Lake in style with a new fleet of sleek sightseeing boats.  The customised boats are powered by special engines that reduce noise by 60 percent and are outfitted with ergonomic chairs, high-quality umbrellas, and fleece blankets. Along with standard safety and nautical equipment, the boats employ a two-man crew for added personalised service.

First stop is at a stilted restaurant to enjoy lunch with a view! Then resume the tour with a visit to Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the lake's main sanctuary, which houses five sacred Buddha statues.

Then continue to the hotel for check-in. A fruit basket and welcome gift will be waiting in the room.

The romantic experience continues with a private dinner on the terrace.

Day 5 - Inle Lake - Indein - Inle Lake

This morning at 08:00, enjoy a relaxing boat trip along a small canal to the Paoh village of Indein.  Explore the area on foot, strolling around the village, visiting a local school, and wander through the beautiful Alaung Sitthou area. Alaung Sitthou is filled with picturesque ancient stupas and has magnificent views of the lake below.

Reach Inthar Heritage House, a combination of restaurant, vocational training center, organic garden, and home for Burmese cats.  The beautiful centre is regarded as Inle’s most progressive enterprise with a focus on preserving the past, cherishing the present, and preparing for the future. The host and chef will provide an apron and recipe book to be used while cooking and later, as a souvenir.  

After a short briefing, forage through three different organic gardens and pick fresh vegetables and herbs. Then it’s onward to the classroom to begin preparing traditional Inthar and Burmese dishes.  The head chef will explain each step while students from the vocational training centre assist with the cooking.   Some typical dishes include mint fish soup, long bean salad, fried spring onion, and Burmese chicken and potato curry. Once the dishes are prepared, head to the adjoining dining room to have a taste of the creations (coffee/tea and one free soft drink, juice, or beer is included).

Proceed to the village of Inpawkhone to observe the traditional silk weaving techniques of Inthar people. Inpawkhone is also known for weaving from the stems of lotus flowers, a time-consuming process that results in high-quality materials that’s famous throughout the country. Also visit a cheroot factory where local Burmese cigars are rolled by hand.

Return by boat to the hotel for a relaxing afternoon before enjoying dinner at the hotel. 

Optional: Head to the Resort’s spa for a luxurious massage or body treatment (client’s account).

Day 6 - Inle Lake - Heho - Yangon

This morning, transfer to the airport for a domestic flight back to Yangon.

Ride a circular train from Insein to Yangon Central Station and walk to Bogyoke Market (also known as Scott Market), known for its colonial architecture and inner cobblestone streets. Browse through aisles of handmade goods, looking for the perfect souvenir.

Before leaving the market, drop by a famous Myanmar fortune teller to get a prediction of the future. San Zar Ni Bo can look into one’s fortune just by reading their palm (client’s account).

As the honeymoon in Myanmar comes to a close, enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner at Le Planteur, one of the country’s best restaurants.
