Located in the crater of an ancient volcano, the Bolaven Plateau in Southern Laos rises to heights of over 1300 meters. Famous for excellent coffee and amazing waterfalls, the plateau makes a great day-trip from Pakse. Given the cooler temperatures on the plateau, spending a night or two there might not be such a bad idea either.

Best time to visit

The wet season from May to October brings rains that make the waterfalls on the plateau much more spectacular, but at the same time, make the roads much harder to navigate.

From November to March, the dry season takes place with a pleasing temperature, the waterfalls are less impressive, but transporting is easier.

The hottest season is from March to May, the heat is manageable but waterfalls will be at their lowest rate.

The gorgeous homestay of Tayicseua has an impressive 15 waterfalls on its land! Do note that you’ll have to do a fair amount of walking and climbing to see most of them.  Don’t miss the largest waterfall of the plateau either: Tat Katamtok.

Riding motorbike

Spending a couple of days and taking loops around the region is an exciting experience that a scooter-traveler would love to be through. Join the group or ride with your friend will be best to enjoy the ride. By motorcycle, you can reach many tourist attractions of Bolaven Plateau in no time. To supply guest needs, there are many agents provide the services with reasonable price, hotel, and guesthouse also available as well. During your trip, the fuel is own you, remember to wear a helmet or you will be fined.

Visiting coffee and tea plantations

The fact that Paksong district is the residence for over 5000 families that grow coffee and tea leaves, and so, this is why they declared Plateau as the coffee, tea heaven. When making a tour to the organic coffee/ tea farm, you can observe the local plating, hatching and producing the product, join a hand with them if you would love to. The best part is that you can taste the delicious coffee and tea produced right at the plantation, sure it will have the taste of fresh, pure coffee, tea flavor.

The farm is easy to find as there is a large number of them. People also organize a tour to the plantation, a reasonable price at 3$, including tickets and coffee, tea tasting.

Trekking to ethnic villages

Bolaven Plateau is dotted with gorgeous ethnic villages that possess a unique culture, which is also the purpose of the trekking tour. During your way, be pleased with tranquil, pristine natural views and the fresh air. Visiting one village to another, you will recognize the typical feature that is breeding cattle and growing plants, the people there live in little cozy stilted houses and wear traditional ethnic costumes. The villagers are friendly and hospital, taking a picture with them would be great to have in your album.

Browsing in the market

There are some local markets that scattered around the area, near the large villages. Besides selling the fresh good for the daily menu, they also provide local handicrafts and lovely souvenirs like necklaces of tribal style, bracelets, copper statues, handy bags, baskets, wallets, tartan silk, etc. The market is the gathering point to the people in the region, so if anywhere that is considered noisy, crowded and vibrant in Bolaven Plateau, it would be the market.

If you’d like to spend a night or two on the plateau, a number of guesthouses can be found along the main road, at some of the attractions and in the towns. They’re all pretty basic and pretty cheap. You will also find a few resorts, if you prefer a little more comfort. None of these places ever really fill up, so you can just show up and get a room.

Here are some of our suggestions:

Guests at Fandee Guest House can enjoy a continental breakfast.

You’ll either have to eat the standard western fare at one of the resorts (it’s not bad really, same as anywhere else) or very basic Lao food.

Here is our suggestion:

Sinouk Coffee Resort

Open daily from 7AM to 9PM, the restaurant at Sinouk Coffee Resort frequently welcomes Lao and foreign diners. It serves some of the best Lao and Western food in the area. It is a popular stop for hungry tourists on their motorcycles and local families from nearby villages.

The best way to explore the plateau is by motorbike, which can be rented in Pakse from 60,000 Kip per day. Some people make the climb up the plateau on bicycles. For people who actually enjoy physical exercise, biking up the plateau would definitely provide that.

The other option is public transport. You can catch a bus to Paksong from the Dao Heung Market in Pakse. It costs about 20,000 Kip and the first one leaves at 9 am. Let the bus driver know if you want to get off at one of the waterfalls. To continue on after visiting a waterfall, hitchhike or wait for and flag down the next bus that comes along.

Luang Prabang will celebrate the boat racing festival (Boun Souang Heua) in Namkhan River during Buddhist Lent Period, on August 26th, 2022.

A notice issued by Luang Prabang provincial office says that Luang Prabang will arrange Boun Hor Khaopadapdin, an annual festival held to feed spirits with home-made parcels of food, and the boat racing activities along Namkhan River.

The province intends to promote the traditional festival and practices in hopes of attracting more domestic and foreign tourists, generating revenue for locals.

Traditional racing boats are made of a single tree and can accommodate up to fifty rowers.

The boats are considered sacred, are cleaned, and are given offerings which are believed to bring victory to the team.

In the downtown heart of Luang Prabang, there will also be gatherings and markets.

The festival will be held on August 26th, 2022, the same day with Boun Khao Padapdine.

Covid-19 put a stop to traditional customs and festivals for almost three years, but now that the measurements have been relaxed, tourist destinations in Laos expect to recommence festivities and offer hope for travelers.

The Rocket Festival (Boun Bang Fai) is a merit-making ceremony traditionally practiced by ethnic Lao people near the beginning of the wet season in numerous villages and municipalities, in the regions of Northeastern Thailand and Laos. Celebrations typically include preliminary music and dance performances, competitive processions of floats, dancers and musicians on the second day, and culminating on the third day in competitive firings of home-made rockets. Local participants and sponsors use the occasion to enhance their social prestige, as is customary in traditional Buddhist folk festivals throughout Southeast Asia.

The festival in Thailand also includes special programs and specific local patterns like Bung Fai (Parade dance) and a Beautiful Bung Fai float such as Yasothon the third weekend of May, and continues Suwannaphum District, Roi Et on the first weekend of June, Phanom Phrai District Roi Et during the full moon of the seventh month in Lunar year's calendar each year. The Bung Fai festival is not only found in Isan or Northeasthern Thailand and North Thailand and Laos, but also in Amphoe Sukhirin, Narathiwat.
