Absurdly grandiose in scale, Naypyitaw (also Naypyidaw), one translation is ‘Royal City of the Sun’ is a sprawling, shoddily constructed city with eight-lane highways, 24-hour electricity, and zones for shopping, government housing and hotels, ministry buildings and generals’ homes. Apart from the roadblocks that protect the roads leading to the generals’ mansions, ministry buildings and the parliament, it’s surprisingly open. Visits to some of its sights, including a giant gilded pagoda, allow you to mingle freely with locals while putting a dollar or two into the private economy. This aside, it can feel soulless – Canberra meets Brasilia with a peculiar Orwellian twist.

Naypyitaw weather overview

Naypyidaw has a humid subtropical climate and the average year-round precipitation is 1.151mm (45.3 inches). Due to its inland position the city experiences larger seasonal variations than the coastal Myanmar.

The city features 3 seasons: a cool (compared to the ones) and dry season and scorchingly hot season and a rainy season.

The cool and dry season runs from November to February and is characterised by pleasant nights (around 14°C or 57°F), warm to hot days (around 30°C or 86°F), low humidity and very low amounts of rainfall. Cooler air masses from the north, may occasionally cause temperatures to fall around 10°C (50°F), but warmer air masses from the south may also arrive and result in temperatures above 32°C (90°F).

In March temperatures begin to rise quickly and the average high reaches 38°C (100°F) in April, while above 40°C (104°F) readings are observed frequently. In May temperatures begin to cool but humidity increases rapidly and the rainy season begins.

By flights

To handle increased traffic to the capital, the existing airport at Ela was upgraded to handle the larger planes. It lies 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Kyatpyae. This airport is now listed as a destination for all domestic airlines in Myanmar (Myanmar National Airlines, FMI Air, Yangon Airways, Air Mandalay and Air Bagan). For passengers coming from abroad, the airport does have full immigration facilities and supports Visa on Arrival.

In reality, only army generals and foreign visitors go to Naypyidaw via plane while all others travel by bus or car. There is no public transportation options from the airport, a taxi from NPT airport to the centre is about 30$

By bus

From Yangon, a bus is available. It travels along a 8-lane highway for about 4 hours from Yangon to the capital (which just springs out of nowhere at a nondescript intersection - very unusual).
