An easy escape from Yangon is a visit to the historic town of Thanlyin, east of the city across the Bago River – both towns house important pagodas.

The notorious Portuguese adventurer Filipe de Brito e Nicote ran his own little kingdom from Thanlyin in the late 16th and 17th centuries. He sided with the Mon in their struggle against the Bamar, before dying after being impaled by his enemies in 1613.

Thanlyin was a major port, until it was eclipsed by Yangon in the late 18th century. It was briefly the base of the French East India Company and the first place in Myanmar to receive Christian missionaries and have its own church. The ruins of a Portuguese-built church, dating to 1750, can be found not far from the Thanlyin Bridge.

Under British rule, Thanlyin was known as 'Syriam' and was the site of a major oil refinery.

THANLYIN WEATHER

Immaculate Conception Church

Also known as the old Portuguese church, these are actually the red-brick ruins of a church built by an Italian priest around 1750. Find them by following a track uphill from near the Thanlyin Bridge; the ruins' friendly caretaker Joseph Paul will likely be on hand to provide some background about the site.

The Catholic missionary Paolo Nerini gained permission from King Binnya Dala to raise a church here to replace the earlier wooden one built by the Portuguese settlers. In recent years the remains have been preserved and, in 2019, a ceremony was held to consecrate the land and to celebrate Mass here.

Yele Paya

At Kyauktan, 12 miles southeast of Thanlyin, is a sparkling temple rising from an islet adrift on a chocolate river. You can feed the massive catfish splashing about at the edge of the temple complex. To reach the islet, catch one of the launch ferries (K5000 return for the boat) from the riverbank.

In the town is a small pagoda perched on top of a hill beside the river, plus a hectic, flyblown and rather fishy market, which reaches its climax in the morning.

Thaipusam

In either late January or early February, Thanlyin’s Hindu community celebrates (or endures, depending on your opinion) Thaipusam, the ritual of penitence in which devotees repent bad deeds by impaling themselves with hooks and nails and walking over hot coals.

Kyaik-Khauk Paya

Around 5 miles south of Thanlyin's centre is this gilded Mon-style stupa, similar in design to Shwedagon and said to contain two Buddha hairs delivered to the site by the great sage himself. There are panoramic views from its hilltop location.

Thanlyin Myo Ma Market

At the heart of Thanlyin is this colourful and busy daily market that's well worth a stroll.
Opposite the market, look out for a handsome colonial building that now houses the regional government offices.

Beer gardens line the main road through Thanlyin on the way to Kyaik-Khuak Paya. Beyond the pagoda is 'central' Thanlyin, and more basic restaurants.

If you’ve hired a driver, stop at Shwe Pu Zun, a huge modern bakery-cafe, located between Yangon and Thanlyin, specialising in sweets; the faluda (mixture of custard, ice cream and jelly; K1200) is famous.

Near the Kyauktan ferry landing are several simple restaurants and food stalls.
